A little History
THE NEWS is a weekly newspaper, established in Buchanan County in 1892.
Yes, this newspaper has been locally owned and operated in the county for 119 years! And, it is the only locally owned and operated newspaper currently serving Independence and the greater Buchanan County area. Nearly every dollar earned by our publications is returned to the greater Buchanan County community in the form of wages, purchases, mortgage payments and taxes.
THE NEWS, along with our free community newspaper the SHOPPING GUIDE, is committed to delivering informative, interesting and in-depth LOCAL stories, LOCAL high school sports and school news, lots of great color photos, and LOCAL advertising! - Much of which is not found anywhere else. We are proud Iowa Newspaper Association award-winners for news, advertising, photography, design and community service.
Our goal, here at THE NEWS is to cover the news of greater Buchanan County, and surrounding areas, so that citizens can stay informed on events, county, local and school news, and much more!
THE NEWS is the only local newspaper that is an official legal publication for: Buchanan County, the school districts of Independence and East Buchanan, and the Cities of Hazleton, Independence, Winthrop, Rowley, and Quasqueton.
We deliver over 5,000 newspapers in Independence and around Buchanan County on Thursdays – all delivered via the U.S. Postal Service. Our mailings originate from the Independence Post Office where we maintain our mailing permits.
